Enamel Erosion and Tooth Sensitivity

Posted .

Feeling a quick sting of pain and discomfort when eating hot and cold foods can be a serious cause for concern. Using a toothpaste specially formulated for sensitive teeth can help. Even so it’s still a good idea to investigate the underlying cause of the sensitivity.

Tooth decay and fractures in your teeth are common causes of tooth sensitivity. However if you enjoy eating acidic foods and beverages or you have struggled in the past with an eating disorder, then there is a chance your sensitivity issues can be related to enamel erosion.

If you have minor to moderate enamel erosion your dentist might recommend a fluoride gel treatment. This procedure can be carried out in a single session. The fluoride gel is applied to your teeth for a period of time. This can help to strengthen the enamel reducing acid exposure to the sensitive dentin layer.

You could also try switching to a brand of toothpaste for people with sensitive teeth. Just be sure to select one with added fluoride and that has earned the ADA seal of acceptance.

If it is left untreated, acid erosion can cause teeth to fail or need replacing with crowns. So, you will need to address the behavior that caused the initial enamel erosion.
